Illness

Life is often referred to as a Journey. We may think of it as an eternal journey but I refer here to what we know as the journey on this physical plane beginning with birth and ending with death. It is a journey through which we evolve by learning from our experience. Everyone’s path is unique although our aspirations by our nature are the same - we all wish to be happy. Throughout the ages there have always been those who have expounded on “The Way” to happiness but yet the evolution of humanity is what it is.

Sometimes the lessons are learned quickly while often it may take many repetitions and much suffering before we understand. One of my favorite movies is Groundhog Day because it describes so beautifully and with great humor the process of learning that leads to happiness. Sometimes the lessons are profound while often they are more like little nudges to push us in the right direction. The trick is to notice which frequently we do not because we are so focused on “our” plan.

Recently, I had one of those “wake up” events which involved illness as is often the case. Becoming aware of our body is critical to self understanding. If we truly paid attention to all the signals it sends out we could avoid much suffering. In addition to diet and exercise, the mind-body connection is a major factor in, some say, more than 90% of illness. Without a doubt it was the main factor for me in the form of stress. Stress is frequently obvious such as when it pertains to work or relationships, but it can also be subtle and unnoticeable because we have become so adapted to living in a stressful world. Yet, it is nevertheless creating toxic conditions within our bodies that will sooner or later become manifest. The challenge is to recognize the mental conditions that may have precipitated the malady, and in this way we learn.

For sometime I have become accustomed to associating my physical well being with my mental state. Of course the food we eat is most important, but if we have given this proper attention then the mind connection must be considered. For me the cause was quickly evident.  For over a year I had become quite involved with an organization that had worthy goals but various issues weighed heavily on my mind at a more or less subconscious level. Ultimately this led to my afflictions - first came Sciatica and then Pneumonia. It was enough to make me realize that I needed to make some changes.

Although I had previously thought the work I was doing was what I should be doing, I resigned completely from all involvement. When I did this I immediately felt a huge burden being removed that I hadn't even been aware of. I further realized that I had to surrender to the Higher Consciousness and reestablish my heart connection for guidance. As I have done this I Have experienced a new freedom I have not felt for some time - the freedom to truly be me. It is as if I have opened a new door though I have no idea what is on the other side.

It is so easy to get caught up in a role we play. This is a reflection of our cultural conditioning. Most of us are brought up believing that we are our ego and undoing this belief is an arduous process. Today there is tremendous support however for becoming truly self-aware, conscious human beings who are interconnected at every level. The truth is not “out there” it is within each of us. We only need to listen to that soft inner voice of love and follow the path. The guidance is always there if we pay attention. Be conscious, be in the present moment and cultivate your intuition for this is your higher connection with the universe. Seek the path of Love for this is the way to peace and happiness. We must change ourselves before we can change the world.

Self Reliance

While self reliance is usually understood to be a positive quality, I believe it is generally misunderstood. Many take it as self-sufficient but this word is totally misleading, and in fact can not be. I have heard of men who have gone into the wilderness and lived for some years without human contact, perhaps they may be called self-sufficient but only for a short while, and even then they were only able to do what they did as a result of the teachers they had and the tools made by others. Humans need community, and upon the community we rely. It is our nature.  Within this context self reliance has a positive understanding when referring to the confidence one has as we come to know and manifest our "true" self.

Community exists at every level from the Family to all of humankind and beyond. Without community we die. Though the body exists we are dead on the inside. It is only within a community that we may achieve true happiness; that is, the feeling of self fulfillment.  However, many have forgotten this truth or perhaps never even properly understood its meaning which has lead to the predicament we have. Gaia is hurting. I believe she will survive, but many question if humans as well as many other species will. In the past I may have taken this position, but today I am convinced that it is our destiny to create, as Charles Eisenstein puts it, "the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible" and communities like TJT (Transition Joshua Tree) are the reason why.   We are in transition. As Elizabet Satouris  suggests we are like the hungry caterpillar  consuming everything it can until it ceases and ultimately becomes the beautiful butterfly.  In the human realm change is often resisted and therefore may be painful, but it need not be so if we embrace it with the faith of a child and the Love that is the essence of who we are.

Separate we are alone, together we are a community.  The local community is necessary - it nourishes the body, mind and soul, but the ultimate goal must be the connection with all Life - with Gaia herself. If we consider the intelligence at the cellular level connected to every other cell in the body communicating to create the amazing thing called the human we must be humbled; yet it is in this way as we join with others that we will bring about that "beautiful world".  Be the change!
May the Force be with you,

Figuring Things Out

I got a new phone and I expect my experience is not unique. In fact, I believe it represents a universal human experience - understanding how something works.  of course, how people feel about the process varies.  Some people avoid anything new, perhaps, because they do not enjoy figuring things out; others love it - they can hardly wait, and even stand in line to get it first. How will it be different? Will it really change the way I do something, maybe even the way I think. Most of us are somewhere between these extremes.

I was happy enough with my old phone which definitely has a learning curve, at least for me. It was my first "smart" phone although I was familiar with the touch screen from having an iPad. Also, it was an iPhone and so it was a familiar operating system. I would still be using it except for the fact that the rural location I am in does not receive all the networks. The one I had worked sometimes but very slowly and even the phone was uncertain. Then a friend came with a phone that worked great with excellent speeds so a logical choice was to change. The only challenge was that I had to get a new phone. Well, actually I didn't have to but the cost would have been crazy for me, and I couldn't wait to look for a reasonably priced used iPhone since my current plan was expiring the next day. I didn't believe it was reasonable to pay another month for something that wasn't working when I could actually pay less for something that did and get a free phone.

So here I am having to figure it out again. as I thought about this I realized that this is the essence of the "Journey". From birth and before we are taking in data that our amazing brains make sense of and we "learn", and its always a unique experience for everyone. Unfortunately, our natural desire to learn, to know, to understand is often not encouraged, and many resign themselves to ignorance because they have come to believe they are unable to know or understand many things; yet examples abound of those who refused to accept the labels of society. Often, less educated formally, they pursue their desire with a thirst for the knowledge they need.  Sometimes known but usually not, these people abound. Generally, I enjoy learning but for some reason I'm not feeling it right now with this phone. Besides, Android? Robots with human form? Are they serious or is it just a joke. I would like to know that. Maybe I'll look it up on wikipedia. I'm sure they'll know.

Of course, figuring out a phone is trivial compared to the bigger questions such as, who am I, what is my purpose in life and how to be happy.  Many ancient traditions have addressed these questions in some manner for thousands of years, and today, books, movies, music and the Internet do as well; yet the number of unhappy people especially in America seems to be increasing based on a variety of indicators.  Nevertheless, there is also ample evidence everywhere that Transition is taking place. On the margins of nearly every institution are those pioneers paving the way, while in small communities everywhere people are joining together with the simple belief that we are all connected and there is a better way to live.  "Won't you join us"!

Time?

"Time slips away..." goes the song. This describes a feeling of course, since where could it go?  Some say time is a dimension, others say an illusion. Even science doesn't seem to have a very clear understanding.  Regardless, we use it in various ways that may be helpful or not, and it is hard for me to believe it has been 9 months since my last post. After reading it again I am amazed by how relevant it is to the period since then.
Usually I am writing about the ideas that have been on my mind. Then, it was about being "in the flow" and allowing the universe to guide me. I believe most people have from time to time experiences that reflect a "letting go" attitude though they may not realize it. Most often we attribute it to "luck" or coincidence.  As I became more conscious of my thoughts and their relationship to events in my life I realized the "connection".  The challenge, that I have spoken of before, is with the "ego-self" who believes it must have a plan and  always be in control. This is learned behavior and is generally counterproductive to happiness and fulfillment.  When I wrote "Resistance is Futile " this is the understanding that I had come to, after which it becomes a matter of remembering. It is remembering that I am connected to and part of that universal consciousness known by many names, and that the Force underlying all that exists is best known as Love;  i.e. "God is Love".  As we let go amazing things begin to happen, and the more we surrender to our higher self the more we experience that sense of connection- of being in the flow. Lucille DancingWind puts it nicely:
"When we're in alignment with our true nature, we’re able to recognize the                                    miraculous everywhere. We realize that miracles are a natural occurrence. Our heightened perspective allows us to receive even greater demonstrations of the mystical and the possible.  We experience the realm of our sacred hearts."

Thus during these past months my Journey has been a confirmation of the truth of acceptance and surrender. I have been guided to a new home in Joshua Tree, California surrounded by the solitude of the high desert.  I have had a "vision" to create a model for sustainable living that may be achieved by anyone regardless of financial circumstances. I will write more about this as it manifests.  Generally, I am persuaded by the view of Nader Khalili and others that shelter can be created from the earth beneath our feet as well as providing the food we need even here in the desert. I am learning about permaculture that I believe must ultimately replace the rape of Gaia by corporate agriculture.  Another recent inspiration has been Charles Eisenstein's latest book "The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible" (highly recommend). He refers to the old story of separation, competition, conquest and control versus the "new" story of connection, cooperation and caring.  We have created a reality totally incongruous with our true nature.  It may be said that it is the cause of most suffering in the world today including that of Mother Earth, Gaia herself.

There is the view that we are evolving as a species and like the caterpillar we have been consuming voraciously.  Perhaps the millions of us throughout the world who are awakening are creating the Chrysalis out of which the beautiful beings we are will emerge as truly "free spirits".  The more beautiful world will not be brought about by governments but by each one one of us manifesting their true self, your purpose, your destiny.  Everyone is important, everyone makes a difference.  Even though you may not feel this way believe it is true and follow you heart. The universe will support you in ways you cannot imagine.

Resistance is futile

The idea of non-resistance is not new, although for many individuals it is.  Growing up in a Christian environment submitting to the will of God was part of the teaching, but it was never clear to me what was meant.  Those who chose a religious profession would speak of a "calling" and submitting to God's will, but what about everyone else. Years later as I explored the wisdom of the East I learned about the principle of non-resistance.  Eventually, I realized that non-resistance and submission were the same thing.

Whenever I think about this idea I am reminded of the well known refrain from the Star Trek series "resistance is futile".  In this case it referred to the power of the Borg, but I sensed that it had a more universal meaning.  Historically Power has always tried to convince people that they should be submissive, yet there have always been those who have chosen not to.  Freedom, although understood in many different ways, has always been a force in human evolution and has always eventually met the resistance of domination.  The benefits of violent revolution if any are short lived.  A popular view holds that our evil nature dooms us (until ?).

For me, and I expect for many others, the notion of competition never felt right, yet the culture I lived in embraced this idea in every way. What was I not getting? The cultural revolution of the 60's and 70's expressed another view - cooperation and caring as an expression of Love. Communal living became widespread and some people began to recognize that we are all connected. It could be said that seeds were planted then that are now bearing fruit. Literally millions of voices are proclaiming an unprecedented shift in human consciousness. What does this mean?

The Emperor's New Clothes is a favorite metaphor that describes the illusion that most people describe as "reality".  We are taught that the world is a certain way and accept what we are told because everyone says so despite the fact that most people have some experience that doesn't correspond to the accepted view.  We may ignore the experience and continue to go along with the "teaching".  Others may express the inner conflict with "unacceptable" behavior resulting in being labeled a misfit, most often a criminal or crazy. I believe depression is most often the consequence of the conflict between "the story" we are taught and the inner truth we feel but are unable to express.  In the story everyone pretends to see the invisible clothes until a child says, "the king is naked".  Perhaps the "flower children" were like the child in the story as they proclaimed the futility of materialism and war, and reminded us of the tyranny of big government and corporations.

As humans everywhere begin to comprehend the truth that has always been understood by a few the phrase "resistance is futile" makes sense, for it is the resistance to the truth that enslaves us and in effect is useless. It is useless because as we reject the truth of our true nature and the nature of the universe we are unable to experience the peace, joy and fulfillment that comes from this recognition.  Awakened, conscious or enlightened all refer to the realization that all life is connected to and the expression of the Universal Consciousness and is sacred.  The world we have created is the result of a story we've been told.  It is a false story because it denies our true nature of Love that is even expressed in the Bible by the statements of being created in God's image and "God is Love".

With this understanding we may begin to experience "the flow".  It is the feeling that comes from knowing that you are right where you need to be and it's all good. This is non-resistance.  There will always be challenges but this is the way we learn, and as we do unimaginable experiences begin to "happen".  Don't take my word for it.  Give up. "Won't you join us?"  Resistance is futile!

Go with the flow!  May the Force be with You!

Waiting

I am waiting, yet experience continues.  If I am present I am able to see the beauty in-spite of the constant reminders that humanity is struggling, as I am, to understand its place in the universe.  I am on a journey.  Today, I am here surrounded by newly planted rice fields that create a sea of green.  Traffic is constantly going by as I am at a busy intersection with highway 99 north of Sacramento. I did not intentionally choose this spot to spend 5 days.  The vehicle I was driving chose this spot by surrendering the bearing for the main idler-pulley without which the vehicle can no longer operate.  This occurred at about 5pm on a Friday as most businesses were closing for the weekend that may have been able to provide the part I needed.  I called my friend 75 miles north of me where I was ultimately headed.  I informed of my situation after which he made inquires.  His results were the same as mine - nothing would happen until Monday. Thus began a 3 night stay.  Fortunately, I had all I needed to live comfortably. My friend volunteered to get the part and bring it to me which I thought would be the plan.

However, I would soon learn that the solution to my situation would be simpler than I had imagined and I already thought that was good fortune since it could have been much more precarious.  After it cooled a bit Saturday evening I took a bike ride only to discover a Catapillar parts and service shop (the type of engine I have) a mile from where I was parked. Wow! I said to myself, the Universe (say God if you like) provides.  The realization of this understanding is an unfolding process since we must reprogram ourselves from beliefs that we are in control.  This is often not an easy process having been brought up on the importance of self-reliance and similar notions.  These ideas regulate our behavior at a sub-conscious level meaning we must learn to operate more from a state of consciousness.  It has been said that perhaps 95% of the daily activity is performed at the sub-conscious or unconscious level.  From my own experience I do not find this difficult to believe.

It is these experiences that confirm for me the truths that so many now seem to be embracing; that as a species humanity is at a most significant juncture in its long evolutionary process.  It is as amazing as the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into the butterfly.  The analogy is so apt (I didn't think of it) since the environmental destructiveness that caterpillars can inflict is not unlike the human activities which likewise can be devastating though on a far larger scale.  But we are nearly full.  Having consumed voraciously we are about to fly. For the caterpillar we might say it is instinct which determines when it attaches itself to a branch and and creates the chrysalis.  While there have throughout history been beautiful beings who have shown us the way, it is only now that it is happening on a massive scale.  Many point to the role of technology in the worldwide connections being made, and while this is significant it is more than this.  The Internet only reflects the interest of those who use it. It is possible to use the Internet a great deal and be unaware that dramatic change is taking place in the world.  People are becoming aware by the millions.  The idea in  Ghandi's famous quote, "be the change you wish to see in the world" is transforming our basic beliefs.  We are realizing the power of consciousness and connection.  Even mainstream science is on the verge of recognizing these principles. The world is changing.

Though I didn't realize at the time I took the photo, my salvation was in the distance.  I believe it may be true that the solution to every problem is only a matter of "seeing" it.

The Denial Of Love

It is my belief that The United States has come to the point in its history when the denial of certain fundamental truths is manifesting itself in the form of suffering throughout the world.  The cause of the suffering did not begin with the founding of this country.  It could be argued that the seeds of our current dilemma were sewn more than two millennium ago when the matriarchal foundations of civilization were gradually subsumed by authoritarian patriarchal societies.  Nevertheless the journey of humanity, just as it is for every soul who walks upon the earth," is what it is".  The key to understanding is to learn.  Ironically, while science has acquired vast knowledge of the physical universe in which we live it has failed to understand the true nature of man -- until now.  Historically science has accepted that its methods could only apply to that which can be observed and the human spirit was not in that category, which was the domain of religion.  However the religion of western civilization, the so-called Judaeo Christian tradition, had become an authoritarian patriarchal institution itself and was primarily motivated by the desire for power rather than the spiritual evolution of the individual.  As nation-states expanded their domain through conquest and colonization with the support and collaboration of the church, the spiritual nature of human evolution was manipulated by religious dogma to support the top down monarchical system.  The world today is the consequence of this journey.

It has become clear to me that all the problems we face as a global community stem from the denial of our true nature of Love. This fact is increasingly being realized though there have always been those (such as indigenous people) who have had this understanding.  Today the center of global domination is the U.S., and so it is we in particular who must awaken to the truths of which I and many others speak.  To the extent that we do not respond to the crisis at hand  suffering will increase. Many scenarios portray this hopeless vision yet the choice is ours. Do we choose Love or fear?  A simple question to which most people would respond by agreeing that it would be better if we acted from Love, yet don't believe it can be that way.  "There is too much evil in the world", they might say.  We have created a society based on fear.  We have been "programmed" in countless subtle and sometimes not so subtle ways to behave.  To not behave (out of fear of the consequences) in ways that are deemed acceptable is to invoke the wrath of the "Empire".

By now if you have read my previous blogs you may be saying that I am repeating myself.  Perhaps I do have a one-track mind since wherever I start I seem to end up at the same place:
     Love is the answer
     Be the Change
     Peace is the Way

The better world we seek will come about as a result of each of us becoming aware that we are the answer.  The truth is that we are by nature beings of Love. Studies now show this and a most compelling movie "I Am" makes this very clear.  As we begin to express our true nature as caring and compassionate beings with those with whom we are around each day the energy of Love will grow.  As I have said before this is not easy because so much of what we believe is based on fear, but we must do it and we can. Whatever ones circumstances it is possible to transform a situation of despair, hopelessness, suffering or anger with the power of Love.  Each day commit yourself to listening to your Heart for this is the source of Love and embrace the attitude of gratitude.  The more I practice these principles the more natural it becomes and the experience of peace and joy grows in proportion.  Discover your truth.  There is nothing more important!

Live Simply

Live simply, that others may simply live.  When I first saw this injunction I realized that it embodied the basic truth that everything is connected.  This understanding can be a powerful force for bringing about change both inwardly and outwardly as well as locally and globally.  Personally it motivates me to thoughtfully consider my choices with respect to the impact on others and indeed our Mother the earth.  This is not easy since most people reading this will have evolved in a culture that they were told was God's gift to mankind, to do with what they wanted.  Even though we now know in our hearts this is wrong, nevertheless  the process towards equality, freedom and justice, ideals we have always held to be valid, is not easy.  Again, the difficulty is not related to governments or corporations changing their ways.  It is the challenge of awakening millions of people from their slumber.

As I've mentioned before I am greatly encouraged by changes taking place already.  There is a greater awareness by many especially younger people of the importance of cooperation instead of competing for ones self-interest.  More people understand the concept of ecosystem and the connectedness of all life on the planet particularly within the environmental/conservation movement. Sustainability has become a word used more and more frequently in every context most significantly with regard to the question of life itself.  Yet the challenges of implementation are complex, mainly because it now involves over 7 billion humans who's lives are becoming more and more intertwined.

It is not logical to imagine that it would be better if we all lived off the "grid", but it is reasonable to imagine that our amazing technology if applied appropriately  can be helpful. It is also reasonable to imagine that we can become more conscious of our "carbon footprint" and make changes to our habitual patterns.  As an example:  When I was young everyone had a clothesline and they  used it.  Today they are seldom seen in many neighborhoods.  Dryers consume lots of energy whether gas or electric.  Granted that dryers are convenient but hanging clothes to dry does not reduce ones standard of living. It does involve a little more time but if our lives are so rushed that we can't do basic chores then probably there are bigger issues that need to be worked out. As you can see we once again have come to the place where the world we want depends on each of us changing to be in harmony with a world that is just and sustainable.  In Sanskrit the word "prama" refers to a dynamic balance that is seen readily in the natural world but is just as relevant at every level of human existence.

Reflection

I have noticed that for me reflection is integral to the process of awareness.  It is often said that experience is the "best" teacher.  I believe it might be said that it is the only teacher, but we do not learn from experience alone.  Clearly, there are many unhappy people who appear to make poor choices resulting in undesirable consequences repeatedly.  So it is not just experience, but also understanding.  If we understand then we learn.  For me, reflection is the process of transforming experience into understanding that leads to awareness or greater consciousness. To be fully conscious is to be in the Now.

Reflection is not dwelling on the past and passing judgement as to mistakes and success. These notions are created by the ego-self to deflect us - our true higher self - from the truth that we are all connected and Life in this form is the journey to that understanding.  Each day, each moment we are challenged to demonstrate - to express our understanding. As we grow we are drawn toward the light but are held captive by our attachments, and so it is said "attachment is suffering".  But the Force is our nature - the Force is Love - it is, in fact, our nature to love, care and cooperate with each other.  As we connect to our true self we recognize this truth, and if we reflect upon those experiences that have brought us "true" happiness we realize that it is when we acted from the unselfish concern of others. I say true happiness in contrast to the illusion of happiness that most people believe is happiness.  If it has anything to do with satisfying the needs of the ego-self it is not about love and therefore will never bring true happiness.  Indeed some would argue that the word happiness does not convey the right idea since it has been so misused.  Joy and peace are commonly used to express the feelings associated with loving actions.  The words are not important, it is our feelings that reveal our level of understanding - our consciousness.

Truth

"In accordance with fact or reality"

The confusion comes in defining reality.  Science decided it could do that although philosophy preceded science.  In fact science evolved as an offshoot of philosophy.  Finally, after a couple of thousand years thanks to the clever or very sick shenanigans of a small number of people,  a rapidly growing number of humans are realizing that what we've been led to believe is "reality" is not really quite right, especially the part that says we need a bunch of rich guys who think they are God's gift to humanity telling us what we need and don't need while they ruin the planet on which we depend for our lives.  Considering all the money that's been spent on space I suspect their plan is to take off in rocket ships and do the same thing somewhere else while those of us remaining get stuck with the mess.  Clearly this is a critical time.  The quicker we can stop the plunder and devastation the sooner the healing can begin.

This is just one example of the deception.  Yet we cannot ignore our responsibility for as it has been said "it takes two to Tango" and "you can't con an honest man".  In other words it is the story of idol worship.  When Moses came down from the mountain he was so angry because the people had turned to idol worship - "golden images" etc - that he broke the tablets in his fury.  There has always been those who realize that the ultimate truth is Life itself.  Most if not all indigenous cultures have this understanding and have survived thousands of year, maybe 40,000 or more they say for the Australian Aborigine,  while western culture in just a few hundred years has seriously mucked it up.  I believe the early Christians were for the most part idealistic maybe utopian.  But Rome had a better idea.  They figured out a way to co-opt the Christians and with a little slight of hand created a belief system that let you appear"holy" while allowing you to worship idols also.  This was the great deception upon which a multitude of lies ensued and Western Civilization evolved. If the debauchery got too crazy you could always say "the devil made you do it" which worked much of the time.  In fact, with a little gold placed in the right hands it almost always worked.

There have always been prophets who attempted to reveal truth but the rulers knew the game since they created the rules.  For hundreds of years heretics were ostracized and if that didn't stop them burning usually did.  Eventually, burning gave way to more sophisticated ways of stifling descent.   But funny thing, just like in "terrorism" you kill one and a dozen more pop up to take his place.  And so it went until today.   Now, thanks to technology the Truth has become obvious, even to the unenlightened, that all Life is connected.  This is a fundamental understanding and seriously undermines what many believe about Reality.  It also requires us, as I've suggested before, to assess and reassess the choices we make each day and consider their consequences, both in terms of the physical impact on the planet and the human cost.  Millions of people just like you and me are needlessly suffering.  We must change.

This is what awakening is about, and higher consciousness, and enlightenment.  It is not an idea it's an action - as in the action of choosing.   That is what is meant by " be the change", for as we reprogram ourselves after thousands of years in bondage we will manifest the "heaven" that was prophesied.  There can be no coercion.  Each human must freely choose.  We may choose wisely or we may choose poorly.  The greatest challenge may be convincing people they have a choice.  Of course, this is what "they" don't want you to know.  Nevertheless, change is happening.  Throughout the world we are discovering the truth and making changes.  You won't hear it from mainstream media very often, but thanks to the Internet we know.  Today they are called pioneers because they break new ground almost everyday.  Each of us must manifest their highest "calling" for this is why we are here now.  We must think like a virus who infects all it contacts, but just like two thousand years ago its about the "good news".  The news? We're all One, brothers and sisters, and if we work together, cooperate, and truly practice the Golden Rule we will manifest heaven.  It is our destiny.  Let's do it now!

Cultivating Peace

I recently read a wonderful book entitled "Cultivating Peace" written by James O'Dea. He has been involved in many peace related and conflict resolution efforts throughout the world. What he discovered over the years was that in order to be effective as an agent of peace one must be "at peace" within - as within so it will be without. It is another way of saying, "be the change you wish to experience in the world".  In effect as we experience peace in our lives we become agents of peace. So the question must always be, are we at peace? If not, why not? As we examine the present moment - the Now - and ask this question we begin the process of self-evaluation. It is the essence of the admonition to "Know Thyself". Usually, the knowledge we must seek is related to that which we believe in the sense that our choices are a manifestation of our beliefs.

If I believe that I may only be at peace in a particular situation whether physical or situational then I will be unhappy if not in that place. On the other hand, if my peace does not depend on a particular expectation then it is possible to be at peace. Though this is only the beginning, it is an important understanding. Buddhism suggests three ideas that may be used in evaluating our emotions that in part create our reality: non-attachment, non-resistance, and non-judgement. This can actually be condensed to simply attachment since resistance and judgement are really just attachments to particular beliefs, hence "Attachment is Suffering". Then we must ask, what are we attached to and why? To the extent that we free ourselves from attachment we truly become "Free" which is an inherent aspect of our essence - the human spirit.

At this point many become discouraged because they imagine that only by renouncing "a worldly" existence, as some do, can peace be achieved, and therefore they resign themselves to an unhappy life because they do not feel compelled to become a nun or live in a cave. However, one could say that the ego has made this rationalization since it allows us to accept a reality that is filled with unnecessary pain and suffering. It is simply a belief that has been perpetuated for thousands of years and is what it is. Nevertheless, the truth of our "true self" has always been known and has been passed down through the generations by those who have come to understand their true nature. It is this truth with which we must concern ourselves because it is this truth that brings peace.

An important part of the process is healing, but healing can only take place after we acknowledge the pain. The acknowledgement is both personal and collective and involves truth and reconciliation. We must affirm the truth of who we are with the understanding of our uniqueness and our essential part in the grand scheme of the universe for we now know that "Everything is Connected". Peace is the fruit of Love. God is Love. We are God therefore it is simply our true nature to manifest Love. As we manifest Love we create peace and so it is said "Peace is the Way". Ultimately pain and suffering is an illusion created by the ego-self to obscure our true self. It is always the ego-self that is attached to the world and in a sense creates the reality in which we live. As we connect with our true self we begin the process of healing as we embrace forgiveness.

To have a world of peace we must know peace. To be at peace only requires that we manifest our true nature which is love and that is always done in the present moment. Love is always standing at the door and knocking and forgiveness is the action that opens the door. Whenever possible we must seek forgiveness of those we have injured by accepting the truth that Love is our true nature. Of course, if one believes that our nature is survival of the fittest then apologies are unnecessary and the infliction of much pain and suffering becomes inevitable. This is the world that most people accept because we have been unaware of Truth, and so to "know thyself" is to know truth - the truth of who we are - beams of light shinning in the darkness.

For millions it is the dawn and though yet dim must precede a growing light. We must fuel our fires (or crank up the voltage) by removing the obstacles of peace - resistance, judgement and attachment. We must question all beliefs and accept only that which the Heart, not the ego-mind, knows to be true; for it is in the heart that the true self resides. As we accept the truth of Love we will accept our connectedness to everyone and everything which frees us from judgment and resistance. As you focus now on this very moment you will realize how all that has preceded this moment has brought you to where you are now and in your heart you will know "it is all good". Causality implies purpose and creation is an act of consciousness. Through consciousness (the consciousness of our Love essence) we create peace. You could also say that when the egos' love of power is subdued by the Love within our heart we experience peace.

Be The Change!
Love is the answer, peace is the Way,
It is what it is and it's all good.
May the Force be with You!

Discernment

As we begin to understand the idea that our reality is what we make it to be, then it follows that the choices we make will determine our future. It has been said that perhaps 90% or more of the decisions we make on a daily basis are made at the subconscious level. We automatically respond to various situations. This is not necessarily a problem, for if we had to consciously think about everything we did we most likely would not survive long. Consider the intense, focused experience of learning something new such as operating a computer or driving a car, compared to the relatively unconscious experience once we have mastered the operation. At that point they have become useful tools that we may use, but now we must be aware that we have choices as to how we use our tools.

We are an inventive species. The early evolution of man is usually related to his discovery (invention) of tools. Once we had this realization there was no stopping us. However, from the beginning the issue of how a tool is used was there. The same tools used for providing food could be used to kill other people. Today the tools we use have become so complex that it boggles the mind of most people, and yet the same basic question of how we apply this amazing technology remains. A review of history will illustrate that most inventions (excluding those created specifically for war) have been used to improve the condition of mankind as well as to exploit, subjugate and exterminate.

So how do we make the "right" choice? Often, when I think about choosing I am reminded of the scene from "Indiana Jones" where they are in the cave and Indiana's rival drinks from what he believes to be the cup of Jesus. After drinking, which be believes will bestow him with eternal life, he dramatically dies and the Knight delivers the memorable line, "He chose poorly". All choices, whether conscious or unconscious, have consequences; so clearly it is important to have some means to recognize good choices. Not surprisingly, much has been written on this topic. To a large extent religions purport to provide the basis for making the "right" choices, and while they can be useful the tendency to become dogmatic has given rise to much unhappiness and confusion.

Often, we make poor choices because we rely on the authority of someone else. Timothy Leary is famous for saying, "think for yourself and question authority." Similarly the Dalai Lama said, "The ultimate authority must always rest with the individual's own reason and critical analysis." As we reflect upon the reasons we make many of our choices, we realize that it is often a habit that may or may not be based on "reason and critical analysis". To be conscious is to be thoughtful of every action we take to the best of our understanding. Sometimes this means we must increase our understanding by seeking knowledge which should be an ongoing pursuit.

If we believe, for example, that the planet is in trouble, do our choices reflect this? Do we try to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and reduce the wastefulness we have become conditioned to? If we believe it is wrong that the labor of the poor is exploited in "sweat shops" do we consider this in our purchasing? If we understand the danger of GMO crops and chemical based agriculture, do we buy "local" and organic when possible? The understanding that everyone and indeed all life on this planet is connected, morally requires us to examine our lives and accept responsibility for our actions, for every action has an effect. We must ask, am I part of the problem or part of the solution?

Likewise, on a personal level, our choices must reflect the understanding that I have previously spoken of. We must engage our heart that is the center of caring and compassion - our true nature. We must know ourselves as unique beacons of light that when joined with others will change the world. To the extent that we make choices from this point of view we will experience the peace and joy that life is meant to be, and then the world will change. Or as Jimi Hendrix reportedly said, "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

Many Voices

I am constantly amazed as I encounter new people expressing the same ideas I have been sharing here. I believe it would not be an exaggeration to say there are a million voices proclaiming the need to awaken from the unconscious life we have been living. Wherever one looks - from the pain and suffering caused by war, poverty, dis-ease and other forms of injustice to the destructive exploitation of the planet - the need to grow beyond our present state of ignorance is evident. What is also evident is that the "shift" will not be brought about by governments or institutions that are heavily invested in maintaining the existing system even though it is obviously unsustainable.

If we consider the transition from the "dark ages" into the "enlightenment" we realize how the view of humanity and our place in the universe changed dramatically. It was a relatively slow process compared to the speed that change takes place today. Imagine having grown up with the view that the earth was flat and the sun revolved around it being told that this was not how it is at all. How incredible this must have seemed. Yet, slowly a new reality unfolded. Today, we are in a similar process. The institutions that have evolved over the past 500 years are being challenged by the growing awareness that they are no longer useful and in fact have become a "stumbling block" to the world of peace, a world of caring and sharing that we all, by our nature, desire.

One example of how people are changing the world is the Vday movement. It grew out of the vision of an amazing woman - Eve Ensler . In 1996 she wrote and first performed The Vagina Monologues out of which evolved the now worldwide Vday movement that through raising awareness strives to eliminate violence against women. It is a totally grassroots movement that is making a difference for many girls and women, but the most important task of raising awareness still has a ways to go, but in this time of "viral" events change can happen quickly.

Still, it depends on the willingness of each of us to be open to change and to embrace it each day and every moment regardless of where we are or what we are doing. Every situation is an opportunity to question and ask if we are expressing our true self of love and compassion or are we responding to the habitual negativity of our egos. Every time we ask this question we connect to our higher self and infuse our being with the positive energy that is the Force.

Be Here Now

In the early 70's Ram Dass wrote a book, upon his return from India, called Be Here Now. As the title suggests he relates how understanding is only achieved through being in the present moment for that is the only reality that exists.
As one is able to achieve this he is able to see more clearly. Back in the day it was one of the books you would have if you were serious about the movement. Find someone who has it (if you don't) and borrow it.

Inevitably, as the veil is lifted, a multitude of questions arise as we strive to embrace the realization of our true self and reconcile it with the circumstances in which we find ourselves. It is never a question of past mistakes for each of us is exactly where he/she needs to be. The question is only what we do now and in the next minute. Is it an expression of love or something else? It's a simple idea, but after years of conditioning it does require effort. Many have addressed the issues that arise but I was particularly inspired by Eckhart Tolle's presentation in The Power of Now and sequel A New Earth. If you are not familiar with his work, it has been highly regarded by many and I assume its popularity reflects the fact that it resonates with those who have read these books. There are truly many wonderful and inspiring writings available today both on the Internet as well as in print, but if you don't have time to read the many then I would highly recommend these for getting up to speed fast.

Tolle draws on many sources to illustrate and explain the ideas he presents which are mostly not new ideas at all. He lovingly shares his own experience with despair and the powerful realization that eventually led him to writing so that others may benefit from his experience. He clearly explains how our egos are nurtured and the true self gets marginalized in the process. Once we see this we can begin to take control of our lives in a way that can bring the inner peace and joy and happiness that we all desire. Give it a shot. Maybe Now is the time!

Fear not...

It could be argued that fear has become the primary motivating force for most people in this country - The Land of the Free.  It operates in big ways as in the fear of terrorism as well as subtly through advertising as in "you don't want to be seen without this" or "wouldn't you feel better (safer) living here" or  "wouldn't you sleep better knowing you're protected".
The drone is constant and people are constantly making choices based on these ideas - fictional scenarios based on someone's imagination in order to get us to make a particular choice from housing to clothing to elections.

But this is only the beginning. In school the youngest children are sometimes made to be fearful of doing something wrong, that is - what an authority says is wrong. In fact, submission to authority turns out to be one of the key elements in our educational system. It is constantly being challenged by some enlightened person or another but the beauty of a huge institution with an elaborate bureauracy is how slow it changes and how frequently the changes are totally opposite the best learning practices which is well understood by science.

So we become moulded into a submissive society and few notice except those who do and yell out, each in their own way, "Wake Up!" Many have described this condition in books, the Internet, and in films such as I Am, Thrive, Ethos, Zeitgeist, as well as Matrix, Avatar, Groundhog Day and others. Fortunately, due largely to the Internet the word is getting out and people are again beginning to question the reality we have created. This was the essence of the cultural evolution of the 60's and 70's, and though the power of our political/economic system prevailed over the forces of general awakening the vital groundwork for the present was established.  Now is the time.

As one awakes from the American Dream suddenly all things are possible such as a world without war. Profoundly George Carlin answers the question "why do they call it the American dream ?", "Because you have to be asleep to believe it." As awake individuals we can realize that fear is created in the mind since it is always one and usually many people telling a particular story over and over. To fear or not to fear that is the question. It is a choice. Shall we love our neighbor or kill him/her. Do we worry about what others think of us or just live a life of love and caring, held up as an ideal but not pursued since it would not permit the injustice inflicted on this planet in every way. Instead we allow ourselves to be persuaded that humans are sinful by nature and only after death (if you are "good") will you find a world where Love is the answer. What a crock of crap! Even the bible says we are created in the image of God and that means Love, and Jesus said anyone could be as he is and do what he does. I guess this is the part we are not supposed to believe - at least literally.

As awake and ultimately enlightened humans we are creating a new vision which each day is increasing geometrically. We are connecting through networks and in community. It is all about thinking globally and acting locally. Every action we make locally now has a global impact from the food we eat to the clothes we buy and the energy we consume. This is the downside of waking and the basis for "ignorance is bliss". To be awake means to be responsible for the entity we call ourself. If its true that our nature is to cooperate and care rather than competing and conquering then the path is clear and a "peace and love" world is the only Way. This is what I'm saying. "Imagine" - a world with no borders? Etc., etc., etc. Be the Change, this is the challenge for each of us, and believe me it is a challenge, but it's nothing we can't do. In fact it has been done (go here) and is being done now. Of course these models don't correspond to the American Dream and so are not even discussed In the "main stream". Fear not, for I bring you good tidings. The age old dream of heaven on earth is alive and well and is becoming - "on earth as it is in heaven".

Know Thyself

Know thyself is a maxim that dates back thousands of years. It is said to be on the Luxor Temple in Egypt which was begun around 1500 BCE. It is more often associated with the Delphi Temple in Greece.

Awakening

A term frequently used in describing the process of change is awaken. It refers to the idea that most of us have not been truly aware of how the world works as well as how we as individuals function. Now, however, that is rapidly changing as a multitude of voices are spreading the word as I am doing in this blog.
Much has been written throughout history about not being fully aware. The bible frequently makes reference to veiled eyes or being blinded by the "darkness". Even further back the Vedic writings speak of maya and the illusory nature of reality. These references apply to both the "inner" and "outer" human experience.

With regard to the outer world of government, institutions and economics etc., there has always been individuals who understood their true nature and sought to enlighten others but in times when the ability to communicate was limited the impact was small. Jesus would be one of the few who it would appear gained a large enough following that it threatened the existing elite, so he was executed as one would expect. The followers were so tenacious that it required the elite to co-opt the movement in order to control it. The Roman Catholic Church that was created skillfully modified the message to not threaten the power structure, and dealt harshly with anyone who would question it. For over a thousand years the church executed and banished thousands of "heretics" and that doesn't include the Crusades which, of course, was simply a cleverly disguised quest for power and control over more people not unlike the "war on terrorism" today.

Now, instant worldwide communication has changed the dynamic. It is no coincidence that this is happening in a time when the need for change is more critical than it has ever been in history. The devastation of the planet brought about by human greed and ignorance has reached epic proportions and truly threatens life for billions of humans not to mention all other forms of life upon which we depend. Of course the threat of a nuclear holocaust is still alive and well. However, people are recognizing these threats on a scale that has never before been possible. How we respond is the great challenge we are faced with.

To begin with...

Birth 2012, an event inspired by the Mayan calendar to celebrate the unfolding of a new world - a world of peace and love, has motivated me to accept a greater commitment to the movement.  It has become my belief that the process of change begins with embracing the vision that a better world is not only possible but necessary to the survival of life as we know it.

As it is for all of us, my journey is one of self discovery and as the excitement builds around the evolutionary revolution I finally no longer feel like the "stranger in a strange land".  Each day I discover that my passion to create a different world is now shared by millions of others -  the realization of which has been brought about by the miracle of modern technology.

It seems to me that there are two critical steps to begin. The first is to believe in the vision of a world based on peace and love. This is not a new idea. It has been spoken of and even prophesied from the earliest times in human history, but the dark side has prevailed until now in perpetuating the myth of the sinful nature of man. At last we arrive at a time when the truth is becoming known - that we are Divine beings with the power to transform our reality and that we are all connected.  The second step necessary to realize the new world is the inner transformation - to "be the change you want to see in the world".  As we embrace an attitude of caring and compassion and the awareness of our connection to each other the choices we make begin to change.  Evidence of the positive energy shift is everywhere once the veil is lifted and we see.

In the days ahead I will share my journey of discovery including the challenges I face with the hope that it may provide encouragement for others. There is no doubt that humanity is "one" not only by virtue of our biological nature but more significantly by the very essence of our being. It is this understanding now supported undeniably by scientific research that will propel us forward. Already people everywhere are manifesting this greater awareness, yet if your picture of the world comes from the mainstream media you may not notice any change at all. It is through the countless efforts of millions of people that we will come together in peace and love in spite of those ( who are really few in number) who will stubbornly hold on to the myths of ancient times. It is what it is and it is all good.

May the Force be with you,

Norman
